Teen Suicide Prevention

The Center for Native American Youth (CNAY) was originally founded to raise awareness for and prevent teen suicide in Native American communities. Here’s the troubling truth:

  • In the United States, Native communities experience higher rates of suicide than any other ethnic group.
  • Suicide is the second leading cause of death for Native American youth ages 10-24.
  • Suicide rates among Native teens are nearly 3.5 times higher than the national average.

CNAY recognizes the most pressing risk factors for teen suicide, which include but are not limited to:

  • Exposure to violence
  • Experience with PTSD
  • Lack of access to opportunity and education

CNAY programming seeks to uplift Native youth and support their efforts to create positive change in their communities. We partner with like-minded organizations from across the country to ensure that Native American youth have opportunities to lead full and healthy lives.
