Yanaba Schroeder (Diné) worked with fellow students within the University of Illinois community to increase civic engagement in the 2024 elections. Yanaba distributed goody bags – which included voter registration tools and culturally significant stickers like “I Voted on Native Land” and “Democracy is Indigenous” – reinforcing the connection between Native identity and civic participation, and encouraging students to see voting as a way to exercise their sovereignty and influence change.
The in-person event not only empowered students with the knowledge and tools to navigate the voting process but also provided a supportive space to discuss managing election stress. Overall, the project increased awareness about the importance of voting, especially among Native youth, and contributed to fostering a culture of civic engagement that recognizes the significance of Indigenous voices in shaping democracy. By partnering with campus organizations and addressing both practical needs (voter registration) and emotional support (election stress management), she helped build a stronger, more informed and connected campus community. Yanaba helped distribute 500 goody bags and saw 35 students participate in the event.
