CHICKASAW, MUSCOGEE CREEK, CHOCTAW
AGE: 20
My name is Danielle Reyse Fixico. I am a proud Chickasaw/Creek/Choctaw artist. I received my associates degree in Native American studies from the College of the Muscogee Nation in April 2017. I am currently a junior at the University of Oklahoma with a Native American Studies major and a minor in fine arts. In fall 2018, I will be a third year member of the Pride of Oklahoma color guard team. After graduating, I plan to pursue my master’s degree and hope to become a professor at a tribal college.
The title of the piece is Looking to the Future. The Native figure is looking to the future. The colors in the portrait represent the innovative ideas of the new generation of Indigenous youth. The symbols are from the five tribes of Oklahoma Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, Seminole, and Cherokee. They represent our culture and traditions we will be taking with us. The black and white background represent the unknown, we do not know what the future holds but we always have hope for our people.
