PASUCA YAQUI
AGE: 12
My name is Reina and I’m 12 years old! I would describe myself as weird, unique and kind. I love creating visual art, photography and writing. These things make me happy and I enjoy doing it! When I create anything I usually find something that appeals to me or what I find aesthetic. Writing helps me express my feelings if I’m sad, happy or even excited, it helps me get creative with poems or paragraphs. These are just a few things that make me, me. Thank you!
Indigenous means “originating or occurring naturally in a place: native”. To me, being indigenous is special. I was born and raised by Yaqui parents and grew up on the reservation, while following our Yaqui culture. This piece of art I created represents my culture and being a young female Yaqui in my community today. I decided to draw a woman with a beautiful blouse. Growing up wearing these beautiful blouses brings back happy childhood memories and growing up wearing them along with other people. This expresses the importance of my culture and symbolizes my growth from my childhood.
