Center for Native American Youth (CNAY)
Founded in 2011, the Center for Native American Youth (CNAY) at the Aspen Institute is is a national education and advocacy organization that works alongside Native youth—ages 24 and under—on reservations, in rural villages and urban spaces across the country to improve their health, safety and overall well-being. All Native youth deserve to lead full and healthy lives, have equal access to opportunity, draw strength from Native culture and inspire one another. At CNAY, this is achieved through empowerment and culturally-competent methodologies that include leadership, youth-led policy agenda and youth-led narration.
ABOUT THIS ROLE

Location: Washington, DC
Salary: $55,000- $60,000
The Program Coordinator is responsible for providing programmatic support to build, maintain and facilitate staple youth fellowships and initiatives. The position will focus on community engagement and partner outreach, recruitment, and facilitation of youth convenings and leadership programming. The Program Coordinator will also be the primary trainer for CNAY’s Democracy is Indigenous civic engagement program. The ideal candidate will have a passion for creating opportunities and platforms for Native youth to thrive and previous experience with facilitation.
This role reports directly to the Associate Director. The salary for this role is $55,000 – $60,000. In accordance with our Reimagining Work policy, the Program Coordinator should be willing to be in-person with colleagues a minimum of 40% of the time while having the flexibility to work remotely for the balance.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Coordinate logistics for various leadership and recognition programming such as fellowships, leadership trainings and other opportunities, including development of recruitment materials, creation of applications and oversight of review processes.
- Facilitate culturally relevant leadership curriculum for youth initiatives, including Champions for Change and Democracy is Indigenous.
- Provide support to Native youth and community serving organizations to facilitate development of Community Action Projects.
- Work with the Program Manager to develop workplans and timelines for programming.
- Support outreach to tribal communities, nonprofits and other advocacy organizations to connect youth to opportunities to further youth recognition on national platforms.
- Work closely with Communications to create media content focused on youth narrative and platforms, including social media highlights, takeovers and blogs.
- Support the program team track youth development, including pre, during, post and follow up data collection to be used in future grant reporting and feedback loops across CNAY programs.
Additional Responsibilities
- Provide on- and off-site logistics support for public events and other meetings organized by CNAY.
- Assist CNAY staff with outreach and communications projects as needed.
- Provide general support for the Center for Native American Youth team. Among other things, these tasks may include event logistics.
- Support and staff youth at events, conferences and meetings, as needed.
- Conduct other duties as assigned.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO THRIVE
- A minimum of three years’ experience in youth programming, civic engagement, tribal policy advocacy or related field; or a Bachelor’s Degree and one year of experience in relevant field.
- Demonstrated commitment to the Center for Native American Youth and Aspen Institute’s mission and values.
- Knowledge of best practices in Native-youth engagement and leadership.
- Experience with civic engagement and policy advocacy preferred.
- Experience with facilitating large group activities and trainings preferred.
- High energy, flexibility, trustworthiness and compatibility; proven ability to determine and hold confidentiality is required.
- Computer proficiency, particularly with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Outstanding communications skills essential, including public-facing speaking.
- Ability to travel 20% of the time.
