Taking Up Space is a non-profit dedicated to increasing Native American representation and decreasing the gender gap in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields.
Led by Czarina Solida, Taking Up Space launched ‘Civic Engagement and Media Literacy for Native Youth.’ This 7-week educational initiative aimed at empowering Native American youth (ages 14-18) through an exploration of civic participation, media literacy and critical thinking.
The program’s ultimate goal is to inspire students to engage with civic responsibilities by creating their own Nations, applying principles of governance, cultural values and community building. This hands-on project fosters creativity, leadership and a deeper understanding of the importance of informed citizenship in both historical and modern contexts. Students left the program with a clearer understanding of how their voices and actions can contribute to community improvement, including advocating for voting, organizing events or volunteering.
